Raising Your Professional Profile as an Introvert: My Journey and How You Can Do It Too

As an introvert, I used to shy away from talking about my accomplishments. The thought of voicing my achievements would make my toes curl with discomfort. I vividly remember when my lovely colleagues congratulated me on completing my coaching qualification. While their support was heartwarming, I felt like a fraud because I hadn’t yet received the physical certificate. The fear of being “found out” loomed over me.

A few months later, I faced a similar situation when I wrote my first article for the AGCAS Phoenix Journal. I received the final copy of the journal the evening before its publication. The anxiety crept in once again, and I was petrified at the thought of others reading my work. When publication day came, I shut my laptop, unable to bear the anticipation. To my surprise, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The encouragement I received meant more to me than I could express, and it gave me the courage to share my article with my university’s internal newsletter.

My mindset began to change when I stumbled upon a book at an Oxfam shop in Broughty Ferry. “Playing Big” by Tara Mohr opened my eyes to the importance of sharing our accomplishments. Mohr emphasised that by voicing our achievements, we give others permission to do the same. This resonated deeply with me. I thought of the many wonderful friends and colleagues whose fantastic work deserved recognition.

Mohr also highlighted that raising our profiles allows us to have a greater impact on the causes we care about. For me, this meant social mobility—a cause I like to champion. I realised that by raising my profile, I could shine a light on important issues and connect with like-minded individuals to drive meaningful change. When this clicked, I was all in!

Inspired by Anne Wilson, Head of Career Service at the University of Warwick, and her successful blog, I decided to start my own. In May 2024, I launched “The Career Coaches Handbook,” an online space where I share my continuing professional development (CPD) journey and insights to help others. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to start this blog if I hadn’t taken that first step with the AGCAS Phoenix Journal article. The blog has been growing steadily, and I am proud of the momentum I’ve maintained.

In July 2024, I featured in the AGCAS Journal again, and this time, I felt different. The overwhelming worry I once felt had significantly diminished. This experience reinforced the idea that our work doesn’t speak for itself—we gain confidence through positive momentum. One small step can gradually lead to giant leaps.

For my fellow introverts, here’s my advice: Start small. Share a recent accomplishment with a trusted colleague, write a short post on LinkedIn, or contribute to a company newsletter. Each step will build your confidence and help you see the value in raising your profile. Remember, your unique perspective and contributions deserve to be recognised, and by sharing them, you inspire others to do the same.

Embrace the journey of raising your professional profile. It’s not about boasting; it’s about sharing your interests and making a greater impact on the world around you. If I can do it, so can you!
